Kristen: We met way back in 2010 on his first day at Dierbergs. I was immediately attracted to him and found
reasons to stick around after my shifts to talk to him a bit. After about a month of that, we finally had our first
date – which was a walk around his neighborhood with some drinks (maybe slushies with vodka?). We talked
for a really long time and I remember laughing a lot and liking him more and more the longer we talked. That
date was followed by a bunch of similar nights.
Kemal: Our first date was a walk around my neighborhood. We bought drinks from the gas station and poured
vodka in them.
First Date
Kristen: We were on vacation with a bunch of friends in Mexico. It was our second day there. We started the day
on the beach with the whole group. Kemal's cousin's wife, Jammie, and I were sitting on the beach while
everyone else was in the ocean and she was asking me a lot of questions about our relationship (like how
long we'd been together, when I thought we'd get married, etc.). Later in the day, I went back to the room to
nap while Kemal and the guys went to play sports. I woke up a couple of hours later surprised that Kemal
wasn't back yet so I texted to see where he was. He said he'd be back soon, so I started getting ready for
dinner. A few minutes later he comes into the room all sweaty from sports, I was in the hallway trying to figure
out what I was going to wear that night, and he says "Hey, I've got a question for you." I'm still going through
my clothes and say "Okay, what's up?" without looking at him. Then I see him getting down on one knee and
opening a box, "Will you marry me?" I was so shocked that I'm pretty sure I gave him a "you better not be
effing with me look." Then the first words out of my mouth were "Are you serious?" After he confirmed that he
was indeed serious, I told him that I would absolutely love to marry him.
I had always told him that my only requirement about how he proposed was that I didn't want any say in the
ring and I didn't want to know that the proposal was coming - he definitely pulled that off!
Kemal: We were in Mexico on vacation. I had my buddy Semir sneak the engagement ring to Cancun in his
luggage. On our second or third day down there I went to go play basketball with my friends while Kristen
napped back at the room. My plan was to propose to her after I get back if she was in a good mood after her
nap (about a 50% chance). Luckily she seemed to be well rested so I proposed in our hotel room while we got
ready for dinner.
